Why Rio Cibolo Ranch Is the Best Place in Texas to Host Your Family Reunion

A family reunion shouldn't feel like a logistics project. It should feel like coming home. For nearly four decades, families from across Texas and beyond have brought three, four, even five generations together at Rio Cibolo Ranch — a private 100-acre working ranch on the banks of Cibolo Creek, just twenty-five minutes from downtown San Antonio. Together with our sister property, Son's Rio Cibolo, we offer something that's almost impossible to find anywhere else: a single, private place where your entire family can stay, gather, eat, and play, without ever leaving the gate.

If you've been weighing hotel blocks, restaurant reservations, and a city park pavilion against one another, this is the easier — and far better — answer.

    One Property. Every Generation.

The hardest part of any reunion is keeping everyone together. Cousins scatter to different hotels. Grandparents tire of the drive between the venue and the rental house. Kids burn out before the group photo. Rio Cibolo solves that by design. The ranch is a self-contained property — venues, lodging, food, and activities are all on the same land, often within a short walk of one another. The eighty-five-year-old who needs a quiet porch and the eight-year-old who needs a riverbank can both have a perfect day, side by side.

Indoor and Outdoor Venues for the Main Event

However your family likes to gather, we have a space for it. The Lily House is our climate-controlled hall — perfect for sit-down dinners, slideshow nights, and the kind of long, lingering meals where stories get retold. The Corral is a covered open-air pavilion built for Texas summers: shade, ceiling fans, big tables, and the breeze rolling in off the creek. Zuehl Hall handles the bigger reunions and adds a stage for music, dancing, and tributes.

Beyond the buildings, the property opens up. Cottonwood-shaded lawns for group photos. A natural amphitheater by the water. Fire pits for the late evening. You can spread your reunion across the day and across the ranch — welcome breakfast on a porch, lunch under a pavilion, riverside afternoon, dinner under the lights — and never have to drive a single guest anywhere.

Lodging So the Whole Family Stays Together

This is what really sets a Rio Cibolo reunion apart. Most family gatherings end at sundown because everyone has to head back to a hotel on the highway. Here, the party doesn't end — it just settles into a quieter rhythm. Our on-site lodging through Son's Rio Cibolo includes waterfront cabins right on the creek, safari-style cabins tucked into the ranch interior, glamping cabins for couples who want simple comfort, canvas bell tents for the more adventurous cousins, and full RV spots for the families that travel that way.

Group reunions can book the lodging together so the whole family is on one property for the weekend. Coffee on a shared porch in the morning. Kids running between cabins. A late-night fire that lasts as long as the storytelling does. That's the part guests remember.

Things to Do — for Every Age

Cibolo Creek runs the length of the property, and in the warm months it becomes the center of gravity. Families spend slow afternoons river tubing, fishing the deeper holes, or just wading in the shade. Up on the ranch, hayrides loop past pastures where our longhorns and buffalo graze — a moment that even the cousins from out of state will take pictures of. There are wide-open lawns for football, horseshoes, washers, and the inevitable kids-versus-uncles game that decides bragging rights for another year.

Add fire pits for the evening, an outdoor movie under the stars, live music, or a cornhole tournament with a real trophy. We can keep it simple, or we can stack the day with as much as your family can handle.

Texas BBQ and Catering, Done Right

Nobody wants to spend their reunion behind a grill. Our catering team handles the food the way it ought to be handled at a Texas ranch — slow-smoked brisket, sausage, ribs, all the sides, and plenty of it. We can do served dinners in the Lily House, buffet-style spreads in The Corral, breakfast tacos at sunrise, late-night snacks around the fire, or all of the above. Special diets, kids' menus, dessert tables — all of it gets handled before your family arrives so you can actually be present.

    Why Families Keep Coming Back

Rio Cibolo Ranch has been in the events business since 1987, and family reunions are some of our favorite weekends of the year. The property is private — no other event groups, no public foot traffic, no surprises. The team has run hundreds of reunions and quietly handles the things you shouldn't have to think about. And because it's a real working ranch with longhorns, buffalo, honeybees, and the Cibolo running through it, the setting itself does most of the work.

"We've had three reunions here now. The first one we tried to do at a park. Never again. This place is the reason our family still gets together."
